TCM Treatment for Somnolence

   Through many years of clinical practice and benefiting from the predecessors¡¯ experiences, Doctor Yang divided somnolence into 5 different types when treating the disease with the ¡°Xing Pi Kai Qiao Decoction¡±.

   A. Spleen dysfunction due to phlegm and dampness: it is mainly seen in obese people. Symptoms: depressed and oppressed sensation in the chest, anorexia, discomfort in defecation, excessive phlegm, feeling like vomiting, sticky and greasy in mouth, lassitude, somnolence, white and greasy tongue coating and soft moderate pulse. Treatment principles: eliminating dampness, dispelling phlegm, invigorating spleen and inducing resuscitation. Prescription: ¡°Xing Pi Kai Qiao Decoction¡± plus Caulis Bambusac in Tacnian, Rhizoma Pinelliae and etc.

   B. Deficiency of spleen-qi£ºIt is mainly seen in people just recovered from diseases or the elderly people. Symptoms: lassitude, fatigue, abdominal flatulence, anorexia, feeling sleepy after meals, qi deficiency with disinclination to talk, emaciation or obesity, edema, pale tongue with white coating, feeble and weak pulse. Treatment principles: replenishing qi to invigorate spleen. Prescription: ¡°Xing Pi Kai Qiao Decoction¡± plus Radix Ginseng, Rhizoma Atractylodes macrocepphalae, Radix Astragari and etc.

   C. Stagnation of liver-qi and deficiency of spleen: Symptoms: chronic anxiety and depression, lassitude, fatigue, dizziness, feeling sleepy, dream-disturbed sleep, discomfort in the hypochondrium, anorexia, difficulty in defecation or abdominal pain and diarrhea, which will be relieved after bowel movement, thin and white or little greasy tongue coating, stringy and thready or sluggish pulse. Treatment principles: soothing liver, invigorating spleen and inducing resuscitation. Prescription: ¡°Xing Pi Kai Qiao Decoction¡± plus Radix Bupleuri, Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae, Fructus Aurantii and etc.


    D. Deficiency of both qi and blood: Symptoms: diminish and yellowish or pale complexion, anorexia, general lassitude, palpitation, dream-disturbed sleep, qi deficiency with disinclination to talk, or spontaneous perspiration, light-headedness, dizziness, pale and tender tongue with thin and white tongue coating, deep, thready and forceless pulse. Treatment principles: replenishing qi and enriching blood, activating spleen and inducing resuscitation. Prescription: ¡°Xing Pi Kai Qiao Decoction¡± plus Radix Astragari, Radix Angelicae Sinesis, Radix Ginseng and etc.


    E. Blockage due to turbid dampness: Symptoms: head heaviness as being wrapped, dry and sticky in mouth but without desire to drink, depressed and oppressed sensation in the chest, loss of appetite, difficulty in urination and defecation, thick and greasy tongue coating. It is recorded in the ¡°Canon of Medicine (Nei jing)¡± that, when the body is affected by the pathogenic evils, the vital qi must be sufficient; while the vital qi is adequate in the body, the pathogenic evils can not attack the body. Head is the convergence of all the yangs and if the lucid yang is blocked by the turbid dampness from ascending, and the turbid yin is blocked from descending, then the body would feel tired and sleepy. Treatment principles: resolving turbidity with fragrant medicine, activating spleen and inducing resuscitation. Prescription: ¡°Xing Pi Kai Qiao Decoction¡± plus Herba Eupatorii, Rhizoma Atraclylodis, Fructus Amomi Rotundus and etc.
